Ask and it is given

Today I remembered the following story.
I remember this day just as if it happened yesterday.
I even remember what I was wearing that day…

Years ago, I must have been about 10 years old.
Down the road from where we lived, neighbors had a plum tree in their backyard. My friends and I used to sneak into the backyard to pick plums to eat. How good these plums tasted!
You know the drill, childish but unharmful pranks.

But on this particular day, I could not join the plum hunt, as I was wearing a skirt and Palladium style knee boots with a heel.
Knowing that I could not flee if we were caught, I remained bravely seated on a bench further down the street.
As usual, my friends quietly went into the neighbour’s garden and started picking plums.
However, this action was not left unseen.
The neighbour sprinted outside to catch them. The kids dashed in all directions, passing me by, “Quick Alicia, RUN!”
I got up and wanted to make an attempt to run away, but I was already too late. The neighbour had got me! He took me to his house to give me a tough word.

Arriving at the neighbour’s house, the neighbour and his wife took me aside in the kitchen to talk to me about repeatedly stealing their plums.
You can imagine how hard I cried and how afraid I was of the consequences….

The neighbour and his wife first lectured me about how bad stealing is.
Andt then.. the tone changed.
They expressed that they had more than enough plums on the tree, more than they could eat. They were always looking for people around them to share the plums with. I was invited to just ring the doorbell next time and ask for plums.
As a consolation, I was sent home with a large bag of plums, enough for my family and enough for my friends!
All my friends were amazed at the outcome of the hunt, (of course they were all lurking around waiting for me to come back out of the neighbour’s house), everyone was amazed of the fact that I had brought so many plums with me.

This event has been going through my mind for years, but today the Holy Spirit reminded me of something very important. He told me, referring to this situation, that in the moments when I desire something or need something I may express it to Him.
He spoke the loving words: Ask and it will be given to you!
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you.”
